Might PG ever allow community code contributions to help continue development?
Welcome to Project: Gorgon!
Project: Gorgon is a 3D fantasy MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing game) that features an immersive experience that allows the player to forge their own path through exploration and discovery. We won't be guiding you through a world on rails, and as a result there are many hidden secrets awaiting discovery. Project: Gorgon also features an ambitious skill based leveling system that bucks the current trend of pre-determined classes, thus allowing the player to combine skills in order to create a truly unique playing experience.
The Project: Gorgon development team is led by industry veteran Eric Heimburg. Eric has over a decade of experience working as a Senior and Lead Engineer, Developer, Designer and Producer on successful games such as Asheron’s Call 1 and 2, Star Trek Online and other successful Massively Multiplayer Online Games.
Might PG ever allow community code contributions to help continue development?
I followed the game for a long time and only recently started playing. After seeing the last blog post I was wondering if the developers would ever consider releasing the source code so the community can help with development should they be unable to continue developing the game.
I could imagine it might also be very beneficial for the game to be source-available rather than open source (as in FOSS). That way players with the skills to do so could contribute potentially a lot to development while the IP, code, direction, and vision are still controlled by the current team. To put it another way -- making the source and assets available but under a license that would disallow others using them and a community contribution agreement that all contributions would belong to Elder Game, LLC.
I know I would love to contribute if the code were available! It might be a way forward for development to continue even if finances become too tight for a full time development team.
I would hate to see this gem of a game disappear. There are likely a lot of talented developers and artists in the community who would love to contribute to its continued future. Has this option been considered? Is it a possibility?
The blog post is from a year ago, and development didn't end up needing to be halted. Recently guild halls were added to the game, which is a precursor to player housing, Statehelm is in the works. Horse Breeding was added, bladesmithing also. We'll get vampires soon. The game is inching toward launch. Things seem to be progressing without taking drastic measures like going source-available. There would need to be a huge amount of research into licensing of different components of the game, and likely large chunks of assets are only for use by the licensee in a limited manner. It would be cool if everybody could contribute code and stuff but it would pose it's own issues and concerns. Follow the Discord channel and check out the sneak peeks, things are moving forward.
