Having just trained crossbow, I tried the skills and ability menu and crossbow is an option ,but, the ability tab is empty. I have a crossbow equipped in offhand and dense arrows in inventory, but, no access to any crossbow ability.

Have you added the icons to the left hand (vertical) bar?
The crossbow abilities are listed under General Abilities at the very top of the skill list rather than under the crossbow skill since they are all sidebar abilities.
