Good bye for some time (with reasons).

Hi.

I'm going to leave PG for some time because of these reasons:
Primary:
30$ is like 15% of my monthly income. As you can see I don't earn a lot so it's a hard decision for me.

Secondary:
1. PG is not going to have a nice economy (and I primarily play a crafter). Developers have no grasp how to make an in-game economy interesting. In PG crafting is only worth to have to make own stuff. Yep, I have browsed all developers' posts about the economy.
2. Vampires are not implemented and are not mentioned as a goal. Sad.

It doesn't mean I think the game is poor. In fact it's great and really enjoyable to play. Despite huge percentage of time that a crafter needs to spend to manage inventory :(

I will gladly hopefully rejoin later.

1. developers: good grasp how to make the game better
2. players: joy. A lot!!!

Hi datar. Care to share why you have doubts about the health of the economy?

Sure. My both English skills and writing skills are pretty poor so it's a lot of work for me.
I think I'll write an article about this but most important points are:
1. Real cost of any in-game resource is time spent. So in PG resources have cost but crafting has no cost.
2. Market is demand vs provide (sorry, really don't know how to say this better way). In PG demands are based on players needs to gain favour, get better equipment etc. This will end at some point making the market pointless.
3. Developers don't focus on this aspect and don't feel it's important (my guess) and don't grasp this part...

They aren't asking for 30$ monthly. Its a one time fee with free content updates as they get rolled out. Youre throwing around a lot of assumptions and accusations. The developers don't understand game economics?

Let me ask you, how long hve you been playing? Have you maxed out crafting? Have you played at the current cap extensively?

Sure. I know. It's still a lot for me. I hope to afford in future....

There are segments of the economy that strongly support on-going Demand that will probably be difficult for Supply to keep pace with. These markets are Food (Cooking and Cheese Making), Flowers and Arrangements, Alcohol, Mushrooms, and Gems. All of those can be used up on an hourly bases(in some cases need to be), and not everyone can spend the time gathering the resources and leveling up the skills, especially at the highest levels for the highest end products. These items that act as consumables probably will never go out of demand.

I can see your point about what happens when everyone is soul mates with all the NPCs and everyone has their dream gear. But hopefully there will never be an end to new NPCs and new players. Hopefully both will continue to be added for years and years to come. :)

@datar It's sad to see someone go, but not everyone can afford every game. I really dislike some of the new tendencies for everything to be locked behind an n$ a month or hundreds of dollars a year, especially when many of these things would only be used a few times a month or year or whatnot.

But did you divide the $30 by the amount of time spent playing? Because that's the real cost you'd be looking at. $30 is a trip to the movies, or out to dinner. A few hours. But $30 can also get you Hulu and Netflix for a month. But this $30 gets you however much time you've played, and however much time until the next version jump in Project Gorgon. And that's a huge number of hours for that price, especially in comparison.

Anyhow, hope you can come back some time!

(Although I agree with you on the inventory management. It's gotten a little better, but it's still pretty terrible.)

Everyone: Please don't poke datar about the money. People know what they can afford and what they can't. Unlike some, datar isn't calling us capitalist pigs (or cows, or deer!), just letting us know that the price is out of their reach right now.

@srand Ugg those people can go back to playing candy crush (or their other "free" games) and the rest of us will be too busy turning into actual pigs (or cows, or deer) to bother with them. Hugs

To be honest, the in-game economy can be pretty daunting to lower level players. I was shocked the first time I perused the player vendors. Realy, the only realistic way to be part of the economy is to farm and sell junk to other players or just stay away from it until you are higher.

I wouldn't mind some sort of favor decay system, possibly even combined with an NPC locations system. It would be cool if something became temporarily available on an NPC you hadn't needed to talk to in months who you've lost favour with and don't know where to find.

I wouldn't want it to decay much while you're offline, and I'd want the climb back to be easier than the initial climb. That way people who are offline for months wouldn't see any decay but those who played for hours...

...But I'd also like to see some sort of system where you could keep track of the NPCs in a little black book. Like, who's asked you for a date? Can I send them a post card? Can they send a post card back? Delivering post cards could be a quest on the to-do board for civic pride maybe... I dunno.

I like that Project Gorgon has so many different mechanics already ^-^

That would be cool. Maybe a tab that tells you all the adventures you've had hanging out with them over the years.

@Aionlasting-he didn't imply the game costs $30 a month, he said that is a lot for his income which is perfectly understandable, not everyone earns american dollars.

Some of datar's criticism is valid and it will take time and a larger playerbase for the economy to become more functional and for crafting to become a playstyle in itself. Right now the players are generally self sufficient.I understand that part because I like crafting more than other aspects of a game too. I hope you come back datar when the game is finished and with a larger and steady playerbase:)


edit-offtopic kinda, the decaying favor please no lol. One of the massive points of this game is that you can come back to it after a long break and be okay, if I had to re-grind favor each time i have a break ugh, no way

This isn't actually true. It might look that way if you only compare your cash to the cost of items in the vendors.

There are low level items that someone can gather and craft that go for large sums of money. This last week especially with lots of new people playing, i've just gone around to vendors buying strange dire for fertilizer, perch and clownfish for speed potions, and other cheap alchemical ingredients. I also put a lot of items on vendors for consignment since I don't have a stall in the marketplace. My leatherwork, stomaches and other items sell all the time.

Time is what costs the most. High end players have $$, and would rather spend those $$ than the time to get stuff. Cotton, cooking supplies, gems, low end metals are always in demand and rarely do you see them for sale.

Part of what is daunting to low level players is not knowing what to buy, what to craft, what is in demand. But any economic system is going to have to be that way. If you could jump into an economy and make money from the start with no skills or knowledge....then it isn't an economy.

Unless I'm misreading your post, you said you disagree but you made my point. You're saying to sell to other players to make money.

Yeah, if any, it would have to be after my black-book idea and @Madmatx 's diary (which I've suggested before, too!) and would have to only count online time.

Counting offline time would just be seriously mean to offline/vacationing players.

I'm a little confused, about to buy this on steam, does it have a monthly fee?

It hasn't been set up, but the plan is to have it supported by optional cosmetic and non-essential privileges from a side-store.

@mcast Yeah. Now that we're into beta and things are looking up... A paywall is coming up. It's not a big one, and even datar said they might be able to save up for later. And certainly their critiques for why they were going to delay were informative. It's always sad to see someone go.

I probably don't play enough to pay had I not gotten it on Kickstarter, but I liked the idea being available. ^-^; I don't buy a $30 game every month.

I have no issue with $30 if I enjoy the game and happy to support the developers, I've spent hundreds on games I enjoy. I'm just a little wary of throwing $30 at something I put away after a few hours.

Still watching more videos on this...

@mcast Well, I keep finding I come back to the game to play something else in it. There are so many distractions in it! But like any online game, it's the people who really draw you back; I'm always finding nice people.

I'm disagreeing that there is only one realistic way to be part of the economy :) There are many ways to be part of the economy. There are two basic ways to sell items: players and vendors. There are several different ways to sell to players. There are many ways to interact with the economy.

And it should be daunting....your new off the island, barely have anything, and don't know the game yet :)

I'd been playing for like a month at the point that I said it was daunting for me, lol.

I've been playing for years and I barely participate in the economy! It's a matter of how much time you want to put into the actual economy part, I guess.
