We are happy to announce the release of an experimental Linux Launcher for Project: Gorgon!
Download the Experimental Linux Launcher Now!
While Project: Gorgon is still not yet officially supported on the Linux platform. players have been able to play Project: Gorgon on many different distributions of Linux for quite some time. We plan on supporting Linux in the future and this is a step in that direction. Please download the launcher and try playing Project: Gorgon. Please report back here your experiences. If the launcher works, great! If it doesn't, please let us know that too. If you could also include your distribution and version number that would be helpful. Thanks for your continued patience and support!
(Edited to link to newest version of the linux launcher.)

The Launcher Works but if i press Play nothing happens :( Ubuntu 17.04
did a fresh install using this launcher.
no incorrect data found when validating files.
once my installation was complete and validated, I attempted twice to launch the game. This failed, but the process was ongoing in my System Monitor, even though the game hadn't launched and the Experimental Linux Launcher closed after I initiated the client launch.
So I attempted to launch the game client from .../.local/share/ProjectGorgon/HeadlessLinuxPlayer default installation directory. Once again, no visual launch, but the ProjectGorgon process was running.
Lastly, I opened the Properties of the ProjectGorgon executable file and manually designated Wine as the default program to open the file with. No luck there either.
running the latest version of Mint.
same here downloaded game tried opening it, did validate it tried safe mode nothing happens.

Same here. Manjaro Linux.
( Doing a belated edit of my 2 posts here, to make them a bit more readable to anyone coming across them later.)

For what it's worth, the ProjectGorgon executable inside the HeadlessLinuxPlayer directory is different from the ProjectGorgon executable inside shardragon's launcher's LinuxPlayer directory ( .local/games/project-gorgon/LinuxPlayer for me). The Headless executable is 29M, shardragon's is 30M.
Because I just had to try it, I copied shardragon's ProjectGorgon executable into the Headless directory, replacing the existing file. That allowed me to start the game directly from the Headless directory. When I then tried the new launcher, it also worked.

This was the fix for me as well. Thank you.
EDIT:
I was able to do the same on my laptop, but the black area where the Enter World and Delete Character buttons are located seems to fill the entire screen within a few seconds while flickering and crashes. I am investigating the logs now.

ofc this cant be treated like a legit fix. all files were downloaded, presumptively, so it seems the fix is just a few lines of code that need to be corrected to make the files launch-able.

Yeah, it's just a temporary workaround until someone has time to fix the launcher. I've been using the launcher with the workaround for the last week now and everything been fine, so at least for me it looks like it's just this single file. Not sure what's going on with SausageJavelin's laptop, though.

Sadly, the bug can't be fixed on your end, we'll need to drop a new launcher. The launcher is downloading the wrong payload -- it's a valid linux payload, but this version is optimized for use as part of our internal systems, which have graphics turned off. (Hence "headless".) So there are lots of placeholder graphics files in there.
I'll have to figure out how we mixed that up, but anyway a fixed launcher won't be hard; we'll get one out soon.

Oh hah. Everything's been looking "just fine" to me, so I think I completely failed to notice any placeholder graphics.
Thanks for working on a Linux launcher!!!

Behold! The ever-expanding darkness... :p
(I finally caught a good screen shot of the madness in action, for your collective viewing pleasure)
https://scontent.fbed1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/25358283_1534942989930096_8870749206389117858_o.jp g?oh=a25a0fe11e5c1071730c6a616db5202f&oe=5AD481FA
For the record, it does crash my computer if I let it eat up all my RAM, which it appears to do after a few seconds of flashing at the character selection screen. Grinds the entire system to a halt after 10 seconds.

Any progress on the fixed Linux Launcher? After what it did to the laptop I've been rather reluctant to actually play with the headless version o.o
Thanks again!

shardragon's launcher should still be working. And yes, probably playing with the headless version is not a good idea - I've just been using it because I'm too lazy to switch back and I like the separate screenshots directory. :)

The old launcher does not work for either machine, unfortunately. That is what prompted me to switch to the new launcher. But watching it nuke my laptop was somewhat unsettling as the TRIM function seemed to take a lot longer than usual after crashing, about a minute vs. 15 seconds. My assumption is that excessive swap (located on same SSD) usage was the cause, after filling up RAM with what appears to be an unbounded request for memory. I watched swap almost instantly get filled, maybe half a second to chew through it.
Yet it doesn't do that to the desktop. Both are the same OS, branch, and patch level. Weird.

Is the Headless version is safe to use? The launcher is still broken as-is, unless I missed something important. Thanks.

I'm running Debian 9(stretch). After starting and aborting the new launcher, I copied the files in .local/games/project-gorgon/HeadLessLinuxPlayer/ProjectGorgon_Data to .local/games/project-gorgon/LinuxPlayer/ProjectGorgon_Data to minimize downloads; after restarting the launcher, it ended up downloading 38 files in ~194MB.
The game launched successfully, thank you for this release.

I tried downloading the entire client in full to both machines. The desktop seems to work fine (I have not tested extensively, things simply looks normal at first glance in Serb), but the laptop has the same problem it had before with the expanding black area on the character selection screen. I made a quick video documenting the problem and put it on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ir652kKn9s
The log had a few interesting entries after logging in. This was not using the on-board Geforce 940m, rather the integrated Intel graphics. I was not able to successfully launch the game using the Bumblebee multi-GPU control utility by running the launcher through "optirun". The command is
optirun path/to/gorgon/launcher
This launches the program on the discrete GPU which is what I was doing to run the game proper on the graphics card, but the launcher just disappears and the GPU turns off from lack of activity.

I finally realized yesterday that there's a new launcher, so I started using it. It's been working fine it for me on Manjaro Linux. Thank you!!!
I just found out about this game today and put a couple hours into it tonight.. had a lot of fun, I really like the game. Definitely going to continue playing. Thanks for the efforts porting it to Linux
It ran perfect on Solus, no issues at all.

Just found out about this from LiamD over at GamingOnLinux. Launcher worked fine for me and I was able to get in game and play without much issue. Can tell the state of the game, but looking past that I was really happy with what I found actually playing the game. Solving riddles and puzzles was rewarding and there were multiple solutions to the larger parts, like getting off the starting island. I had solved one way to get off and was just exploring when I ended up escaping by accident while exploring. I like the direction that is indicated and the skill, crafting, and other currently implemented systems seem fine.
I'll stick around and play some more and report any issues I may run into. Looking forward to the development of the game towards its polished release ^.^

I did not install to default location, it's in ~/Games/Gorgon/
All libs, kernel, etc up to date as of this post from default Repositories.
Frame rate varied largely, 24~180FPS. Interior locations had the highest frame rate while large out door areas suffered the most slow down.
Only occasional clipping, and teleporting of mobs durring combat. Items with additional light sources, such as the Hat with the circling orb of light caused graphical glitches.
Enabled most graphical features including portrait and max detail.

Any ideas?
Edit: Well something was acting wonky on my system, so I logged out. It hung at logout, so I hard reset. Logged back in and ran the installer and it is downloading now. The terminal output is the same, but the window launcher is working, where it would just flash open and close before.

Works flawlessly on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon.
Downloaded the launcher, let it update, click play :)
Not the bestest of performance, but that's partly my fault for using old tech with open source AMD Radeon drivers.

I have downloaded your game to test and try on another Linux system.
I have signed up for your forum to extend the information I received while setting up your game and helping to test your Linux connections. This is a log of what I saw and what I did.
Downloaded launcher files.
Ran launcher file. I Could read a screen of recent game updates (text) while files were downloading and showing a progress bar (also having text for progress) at the bottom of launcher screen.
Launcher says "All done!".
Clicking "Play Project: Gorgon" button.
Wait - what is that "Options..." button next to it.
Clicking Options button first - hrm, 5 more buttons in here, better use "Back" button. I'm not this advanced yet. What is "Validate Installation", I wonder but I dare not touch it.
Aha, here is the place to create an account. It has two buttons "I'm a new player" and "I already have an account".
Clicking the button for "I'm a new player" - now there is a screen to "Agree" or "Disagree" with the EULA text being offered.
Clicked "Agree" and now there is a code of conduct screen of text.
Clicked "Agree" again, woah, woah, a screen just flew by and had something at the bottom to read. I missed it - I think it was a tip screen?
Now there is a character selection screen.
There is that "tip" screen again. That's what it was, an interstitial tip/loading screen.
Was able to setup an account, then logged back into it without issue.
Settings screen showed on login and "Framerate" is showing 60.4.
Now creating a forum account to post this information.
In Gmail the email for forum registration went to the "Spam" folder. Had to search for it.
Computer specs are...
Dual boot with Grub - Ubuntu and Windows 10 (I don't use the Windows portion unless I have to so will not be using that for the game)
OS = Ubuntu 17.04 (64 bit)
Memory = 32 GB
CPU = AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-Core processor x 32
GPU = GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2
So far everything is smooth as butter. I am only on the island. I'm but a newblet. Let the journey begin.

Found this via GamingonLinux also, but I had an issue with the installer. Downloaded fine, extract, ran the executable, but it errored out almost immediately with:

Someone should probably let you know that all flavors of Ubuntu 17.04 have reached End Of Life as of January 13, 2018 which means you will no longer recieve updates to your system from then on. It is important to consider switching to a supported version in order to be sure you receive the latest security patches and bug fixes.
A list of currently supported versions can be found HERE (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases)

I still cannot get past the character selection screen on my Linux laptop, even with the latest patch. The little blackish area with the Enter World and Delete Character buttons still flashes while growing to fill the screen and crashes the machine if I do not force quit the client. I am using the integrated Intel graphics because I cannot get the discrete nVidia GPU to work past the launcher (probably my fault).
I'll fiddle around and see what I can do, but there doesn't look like much in the Unity3d logs.

For me is just another game i can't use. because of Unity3D
$ ./ProjectGorgonLauncherLinux.x86_64
Set current directory to /home/inukaze/Escritorio/PGL
Found path: /home/inukaze/Escritorio/PGL/ProjectGorgonLauncherLinux.x86_64

Mono config path = '/home/inukaze/Escritorio/PGL/ProjectGorgonLauncherLinux_Data/Mono/etc'
Preloaded 'ScreenSelector.so'
Player data archive not found at `/home/inukaze/Escritorio/PGL/ProjectGorgonLauncherLinux_Data/data.unity3d`, using local filesystem
Well i can't test, for two reasons
1 - i don't know which are the minimun pc specs reqs
2 - unity3d never works for me

Hm, the game was working for me before (i think last time i play was nov-dec 2017 testing the new GUI and it was fine), but now once ingame, there is no GUI at all, only a weird column on the left side of the screen. The 3D part of the screen seems fine however, and i can move around, so it seems it's only the GUI part that is "broken".
Any idea ?

Yes, I think it is, sorry. Probably the first thing to try is to work your way through Silvonis's favorite sticky post: https://forum.projectgorgon.com/showthread.php?136-Project-Gorgon-Support-Troubleshooting-Read-First! .
If that doesn't help, one more thing I would try is renaming your GorgonConfig.txt ( likely located in ~/.config/unity3d/Elder Game/Project Gorgon ) to something else. This file contains all your custom settings like graphics, gui preferences and keybindings, so you probably don't want to delete it entirely, but if you rename the file to get it out of the way and the game works with the default settings, that will at least give you a general idea of where the problem is occurring. Since you were last running the game with a test version of the new UI, maybe something there got messed up for you...
And if none of the above helps, post here again? Maybe someone else will have a better idea of what's going on. Good luck!!

I've been trying to think of what could cause that but I don't have any good ideas. Unity does have problems with some linux video drivers reporting the wrong scale. I don't know whether Unity or the video driver is at fault, but sometimes Unity's GUI thinks the screen is the wrong size. (Some people reported that the UI grows infinitely big ... same issue. It's fixed by using a different driver.) However, the nvidia driver is the one I'd recommend, and you're already using that.
So I don't have any good leads on what could cause that. I would first try using the "safe mode" setting in the launcher (or just deleting your GorgonConfig.txt) to make sure it's not a corrupted or invalid configuration. If that doesn't work, it could be that the driver is improperly configured after an update, so you might try reinstalling it. But really, those are just guesses.

Thanks,
It works !
Actually i deleted all files from ~/.config/unity3D/ProjectGorgon, but i didn't delete the ones from ~/.config/unity3d/Elder Game/, and that did the trick.
No i only have to redo my settings, but at least i can play without visible issue (so far).
edit : alright, so it seems there is something that destroys my settings. I changed many options, quit the game, and now it's broken again, but differently (the screen is all brown after character selection). If i delete the GorgonConfig and relaunch, it's fine. So, one (or more) options is doing that... I need to find it.

After the Steam release this launcher can't be used anymore, if I understand correctly? In that case, I suggest this thread can be un-stickied.

Good point! I'll unstick it.
