I believe the last time i played this game was late 2015 or early 2016, I just saw this game again while browsing through my files, so i decided to open my client and see if it still works. But it says my launcher is version 5 and i need version 6 and i was directed to this site. I doubt i could remember my original login details or my character's name. (I doubt my account still exists, even, they probably delete accounts that were inactive for so long.) I actually remember that when i started playing the tutorial island didn't even exist, it was just a cave instead, and i remember hearing about it's release when i was still playing. Hell the original kickstarter campaign was still going when i started.
I don't think i even got all that far into the game, I was pretty casual and only been in the starting cave, the zone right outside it with the city in the middle, and the other zone connected to it. As well as some dungeons in those zones, i believe there was one with mushroom monsters or something. I was a human with a sword and shield.
So, i assume a LOT has changed over all those years, can someone help me catch up? I'll have to start over with a new account since as i said my old one probably doesn't even exist anymore.
Also can you still play for free or do you have to buy it now? What is the monitization system? At pre-alpha it was free with no microtransactions, IIRC there was talk about an optional subscription like Runescape.

First, welcome back!
If you want a brief summary of what has changed in-game, check out the wiki page for Quick Notes (http://wiki.projectgorgon.com/wiki/Quick_Notes).
Your account probably exists, and I would suggest sending an email to support@projectgorgon.com if you want to try and find your old account (I think I remember you).
To play the game, you will need to purchase it (either through the Gorgon Shop or Steam), although you should be able to download the newest launcher and play for free for a few more days. There are no micro-transactions, and the developers are still talking about an optional subscription in the future.
Oh, I didn't realize we'd already taken them off the front page, oops. Here are the links to the alpha launchers:

The game has been released on Steam Early Access, you have a limited time that you can use the non-Steam launcher to login without buying. Once that period is over (two weeks from the start of Steam Early Access), you have to buy the game to play. The Optional VIP subscription system isn't in game yet. There are no microtransactions.
Now what is new. I don't go back as far as you with in game play, but here is some of the more recent highlights.
Most skills now have a cap of 70 (only 30 more levels to the end game caps)
Brewing alcohol is a skill
The Orcs' homeland zone is ingame
Bard is one of the newer combat skill
Knife Fighting is one of the newer combat skill
Serbule has been updated
South Serbule is Now Serbule Hills, and it has way more NPCs and mobs
Mushroom Farming is a skill, but you can still pick mushrooms the old way as well.
Rabbits are the latest new Animal Form
Probably lots of changes to crafting and modding gear.
Poetry can be read out loud at podium and all listeners get xp.
new mining nodes in Rahu
leaving out tons and tons probably.

Thanks, if i manage to get my old account back are there any kind of veteran rewards? Would be cool to be recognized for playing this game before it was cool.

There are several titles depending on how long you've been playing. They include Pre-Alpha 0 Survivor, Pre-Alpha Survivor, and Alpha Tester. There are also skill-specific ones, like Proto-Druid.
