Okay, a little more explanation than just a link. Both Microsoft and Nvidia have code that takes advantage of the much more powerful GPUs we have now to provide the ability to do real-time ray tracing. Ray tracing is a technique that builds the scene based on the light sources and tracing where the rays extending from the light sources would strike then reflect towards the viewer. It can result in extremely realistic imagery. However, it is so compute intensive that in the past it would often take hours to render a single frame. The developments by Microsoft and Nvidia would allow incorporation of elements of ray tracing in applications/games that could operate in real-time. It could make the water in games actually reflect what you would expect them to, same with window glass, shiny metal surfaces and mirrors.

Wouldn't a compute intensive feature like this still hurt performance or am i missing something?
