View Full Version : Development Team: SEND E-MAILS IMMEDIATELY

As someone who works in marketing, I strongly urge the development team to prioritize sending Steam keys to everyone who is eligible to receive them. People who frequent Steam yet are part of your new audience rely on many positive Steam reviews to convince them to purchase the game. As of now, there are only 8 reviews. I imagine that many people who have backed the game are waiting to write a positive review but cannot (myself included).

If you want to make the most of your launch day, please send Steam links immediately.

Congratulations, by the way!

Yeah beleave me there may be convincing to be done considering the negative talk on mmorpg reddit. Mainly concerning the price.:(

I can't blame gamers for thinking the EA price is too high. Comparatively, it is. However, hopefully the developers can make a convincing case that it's worth it.

Oh, ok I see i did not miss my key somewhere : it has not been sent yet.
I must say i'm a bit surprised because it's the first time in a KS project i receive an email about a game being available on steam before the backers received the key.
But it's not a big deal, i just fear many people like me won't understand what they missed.
I suggest you send a little message on KS to everyone saying they will receive the key very soon ;-)

Just as an FYI, although we appreciate all Steam reviews, you should be aware that Steam changed the rules for reviews last year. Only people who actually buy the game through Steam will have their reviews "count" toward the overall rating (of e.g. "mostly positive" or whatever). People who receive Steam keys can still write reviews, but their score isn't aggregated into the overall score. (http://store.steampowered.com/news/24155/)

Steam did this to combat an apparent rash of "we'll give you a free key if you give us a review" scams that some developers were running. Unfortunately it really hurts us, since it goes against previous advice they gave during the Steam Greenlight process! In fact, this new policy is why we haven't sold the base-game in our Gorgon Shop: we prefer if players buy on Steam so that they can give "valid" reviews.

We'll be getting the Steam keys out this week but it doesn't make sense to hurry this delicate process. Let us get it right and make sure all the details line up. Thanks!

Hello Citan!

I was unaware of this change and I'm sorry to hear it negatively has affected you (since most of your loyal fan-base, including me, will not have an equal effect on the weighted score).

Nevermind!

All the best,

Crissa

Even though we won't count, we can give good reviews to let people read.

Right now the negative review is 'waaah no pvp' which is sad.

Hi there everyone,

I haven't been playing the game for quite some time, although I did get one of the $100 packs I think, on KS. I noticed today while looking at Steam that PG has launched. Do I just wait for some email now and then I can start playing again, but through Steam?

Thanks

Cratoh,

it's my understanding that you can still play through the usual game client although an e-mail will be sent in the near future with instructions on how to play the game through Steam's client.

Ah thanks. I tried to log in with the old one but it's out of date and I'm hopeless with stuff like getting the right new launcher, so I failed doing that. Guess I will just wait for steam key. Thanks for answering.

We can, but most people will simply look at the general rating without reading more in-depth about them.

I've already started downvoting the negative reviews that are senseless. IF its a negative review with a good basis I won't touch it but some are just plain dumb.

The reviews that pop to the top by default are the ones with the highest ratings, tho, so. I don't look at the overall, just the most recent negative, personally.

You would have two copies then. You can write a review either way but Steam will weigh them differently.

I may do that... As long as I can still put my pledge package on my account than I would have no problems owning two copies

You can do that; simply play with your pledge account (i.e., link that with your Steam account) but review the game via your new key.

Perhaps the developers would consider adding "hidden" Steam packages for those of us who would purchase the game on Steam to leave a properly weighed review? Not sure if that's possible, but I feel sorry for the team because those of us who are most likely to review are not given the same authority despite us knowing far more about the product than a new buyer.

Technically you could buy the game, write a review, and then get a refund. Cheating a bit but so is the fact that backers opinions won’t count.

A followup on the emails:

We've sent out most of the Kickstarter backer emails (the few unsent ones have missing data and we'll need to email those people individually). If you backed us on Kickstarter, look for an email with the title "Project: Gorgon is now on Steam, and here's your Steam key!" It seems to be landing in the "promotions" tab in gmail. (We have no control over that.)

Indiegogo and Gorgon Shop purchasers will get their email in a day or two -- sorry for the delay, we're trying to get all the details perfect. (These people will need to reply to our email and tell us their alpha account name so we can make sure they get their other rewards... and we want to make sure that process is going to be smooth.)

Can we buy the game and then still link the code they send us to steam... That way I can still write a review

You definitely can, although as Marlevvl mentioned, that means you'll end up having two accounts! And for the record, the order won't matter: you could buy the game now and link it to your account, then use the key we email you with a brand new account, if you wanted. Or vice versa.

Perhaps the developers would consider adding "hidden" Steam packages for those of us who would purchase the game on Steam to leave a properly weighed review?

While I really appreciate the thought, Steam's rules now prohibit us from offering "anything" in exchange for a Steam review. And they can get pretty snippy about that stuff, so best not to risk it.

MarleVVLL

If you purchase, review, then get a refund, your review will be removed from the store's page.

Thanks for the update Citan. It's disappointing that they see that as an "exchange for a review" when it is not since I already left a review; I just want a properly weighted one!

Many modern MMO players are accustomed to a F2P model, so to charge some amount beyond ~$14.99 upfront is shocking to them. For those of us who are older and are aware that no F2P game really is free (with maybe one exception of PoE), spending ~$30 for a game with no subscription cost is a no brainer.

So, I imagine Citan and the others are aware of this and are probably catering the game to us anyways. I'm not sure, so I hesitate to speak for them. Hopefully their price point can be flexible in the future to spread awareness of the uniqueness of the game.

At the same time? I imagine so since I presume that one Steam account can sync to one Project Gorgon account (as they eventually become synonymous to the server, I think).

I've thought about having multiple accounts for trades and whatnot but I haven't because I never took the time to see if it was kosher. Are we allowed to set up and run an alt, say playing music while we farm on thr same comp, same IP?

Clarification on this might lead to one or two alt accounts, lol.

MarleVVLL

I do not know the answer to that question although I'm going to suppose that you would need two Steam accounts at the minimum assuming their servers do not bar two-boxing (wow, I haven't used that term in a while!).

Well, I know that people have had more than one account for muling and made no secret of it. I think the is no botting or scripts but they don't care if you have more then one account. I've never bothered doing it but was considering it for the future since crafting mats take up so much space and I'd like to leave a character slot open for new races.

That's what I was told by Srand when the "mule police" saw me muling last year and cried bloody murder. Srand swung by, saw my mules and we chatted. As long as you are not botting, running scripts, etc I was told mule accounts are fine.

Some folks also don't play 1 main toon, power leveling it. Some people like to switch toons and explore more.

Wow, that was a nice reading. You can clearly see that graphics are some kind of mental barrier for ppl. I'm not sure if that's good or bad overall. Sure, playing with more ppl is fun, but I always had a thought that current Project Gorgon graphics keep all the trolls and greedy people away from the game. This surely increases density of lore/fun-driven people within the entire community, hence making the game even more enjoyable. Nevertheless, the 'graphics' people are probably the main money sink on the game market..

To play through Steam, my impression then is to have two separate Steam accounts but there may be simpler solution.

The MMORPG subreddit is a rather toxic place for the most part, unfortunately. It used to be a bastion of some rationality by those who were advocating for better MMO games but now it has faded into a dismal and trollish swamp, filled with those who would rather complain and point a finger than enjoy the very solution to their expressed problems.

For example, there has been an outcry there recently about getting back to the roots of great classic games with no P2W aspects or a cash shop. Well, here comes Project Gorgon (even with no subscription fee!) but most of the vocal individuals in the sub go apeshit because the development team wants ~$29. Talk about bizarre.

I remember a similar discussion when people wanted to multi-box Wurm Unlimited. On the one hand the developer should not prevent people from buying multiple copies as long as there is no botting. You don't even need to multi-box in PG. I remember using 3 mules and swapping items through the shared chest. It took a lot of time though and added a lot to the suck factor.
On the other, if you want to multi-box a Steam MMO hassle-free, you should run each copy on a different PC. Steam does not allow one to log in with multiple accounts on the same PC. There used to be a trick in Wurm Unlimited where you ran Steam, logged into the game, then killed some Steam executables in taskmanager, started Steam again, and logged into WU with another account. But this has been patched out, and after a few months WU started shutting down when Steam was closed, as any other Steam game should, Steam wants to be a bit of a DRM platform after all.

There is a new generation who grew up on free or $0.99 mobile games. Millenials will be the death of us ;).

I remember playing Wurm Online many years ago. Good times.

I do wonder how mobile gaming pricing schemes has affected projects like P:G. Personally, I cannot stand playing games that have an entry fee, optional subscription, & a cash shop (with imperative items within it). So, I would gladly spend a bit more upfront for the entire game!

A reminder: you can still download the launcher from http://projectgorgon.com and play that way. It's not a requirement to play from Steam yet! And won't be for more than a week.

We've sent most keys now (check your Spam/Promotions folders!) The keys we have left to send are the ones that need multiple keys or had special processing notes. We have to send those manually, and we're still getting everything organized, so it will be a day or two, sorry! But you will get your keys, not to worry. And in the mean time, just play the alpha build, it's literally the same client.
